From the previous Shikoku, we crossed the Shimanami Kaido to introduce Hiroshima Itsukushima Shrine.
Itsukushima Shrine from the Shimanami Sea Route
The drive was enjoyed with beautiful views of the Shimanami Kaido.
It is a 60 km long motorway linking Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, with Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, and crosses several bridges as the Nishi-Seto Expressway, Ikuchishima Road and Oshima Road.
We stopped at a service area on the way and had a lemon cake.
The slightly smaller lemon-shaped cakes are sweet and sour and very tasty.
Hiroshima Itsukushima Shrine
From Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, it took about 3 hours and 30 minutes by car via the Shimanami Kaido to arrive at the Miyajima-guchi ferry port.
On the way, we got caught in an unexpected traffic jam, and although the ferry port was right in front of us, it took us a long time to park the car, so we arrived about an hour later than planned. 💦.
It’s better to go with plenty of time to spare. 🚗🚗🚗.
The ferry was leaving every 15 minutes or so, so we were able to get on rather quickly. ⛴

A 10-minute boat ride takes you across to Itsukushima Island. From there, you can walk to the shrine.
I was surprised at the number of tourists.
There were lots of shops and some lovely deer there.
When I point the camera at them, they come up to me thinking they’re going to be fed, and then they’re startled and run away (laughs).
We arrived just as the tide was going out, so we could not see the fantastic torii gate floating in the sea.

On the way, we stopped at a shop where we could eat freshly baked momiji manjuu and had hot momiji manjuu. The freshly baked buns were different and very tasty.
When I say Hiroshima, I mean the [Shamojiru]. (Laughter)
If you notice, you will encounter a deer. Their faces are very cute.
We plan to stay overnight next time to photograph the torii gate over the sea, and would like to visit the place again.
Yamaguchi Prefecture Kintai Bridge
The next stop was Kintai Bridge, about an hour’s drive from the ferry port.
200 m long wooden bridge with five arches in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.
The wooden arched bridge is very beautiful from a distance, but the structure is also very beautiful from underneath.

I did not cross the bridge this time, but if you do, you can see a white snake.
The three-day, two-night trip to Okayama and Shikoku is now safely over and we are on our way home.
The Kanmon Bridge in Shimonoseki is one of my favourite bridges.
On the way home, I had Ichiran ramen at the Koga service area.
Ichiran’s ramen is delicious after all.
